Daniel Land has been making music for a decade (his first two releases were soundtrack works on Lowman Discs records) and he has been writing songs for five years. However the six tracks on Voss - the band's debut release - were written and recorded in what he calls "an amazing burst of energy" in four weeks of Autumn 2007 at his churchyard studio The Cloisters in Manchester.
Written and produced by Daniel Land (vocals, guitars, sonic landscaping), and featuring help from long-term band members Graeme Meikle and Oisin Scarlett (guitars) the work is surprisingly sophisticated and mature for a debut release, taking its cues from shoegaze music like Slowdive but adding an unexpectedly melodic edge to the sound - or as Daniel says, "Just well-crafted songs that happen to use ambient guitars".
Warm, inviting, and ranging in mood from uplifting to unbearably sad, the six-track EP features such tracks as critical favourite "Within The Boundaries", the gorgeous lead single "Locust", and - Land's current favourite - the brief, haiku-like instrumental contribution "Whippersnapper" by Oisin Scarlett - a piece that was caught off the cuff during a recording warm-up. "I was just setting up the microphones to record him", says Daniel. "Ois was playing away and this gorgeous instrumental piece was coming out of nowhere. I recorded it, added some treatments, and there it was - done. It probably took ten minutes to make. And it has a freshness that you can't match when you're writing songs".
Also in the pipeline is the delayed sophomore release Imagining October EP - meant to be a companion piece to Voss but now due January or February 2008. The band's debut LP release Love Songs For The Chemical Generation will follow, and will feature new band members Andrew Galpin (bass) and Marcus Mayes (drums), fresh from their Spring UK tour.
