Vocokesh began in 1991 as a spinoff of the band F/i. Richard Franecki, one of the founding members of F/i, struck off on his own, due to the usual reasons(musical differances, personal conflicts, as well as disinterest in touring) He initially enlisted former F/i member, and longtime musical associate Jan Schober on drums, as well as John Helwig on guitar and bass, along with a list of assorted guest members appearing on various recordings. Vocokesh recorded the LP 'Ispepnaibara' for the Massachusettes based RRR label in 1991. After this came the 12" EP, 'Still Standing in the Same Garden' as well as the CD's 'Smile! and Point at the Mountain' and 'Paradise Revisited'
for the Chicago based Drag City label in the 90's. Vocokesh also appeared on two split LPs, One, on the RRR label with F/i, and another sharing the bill with ST37, also on RRR. After a couple years of inactivity, Vocokesh was picked up by the Strange Attractors Audio House label of Portland Oregon. Thus far, two CD's have been released on Strange Attractors: 'The Tenth Corner' and 'Through the Smoke'.
Aside from this, Lexicon Devil, a small label in Australia, has reissued on CD the first LP, 'Ispepnaibara'. Two more CD's, 'Vibe', and 'Upon Further Examination' are available from Marshead Records, a small 'boutique' label based in Arkansas. The music of Vocokesh continues along the same path as Franecki's earlier band, F/i. It's been descibed as freeform psychedlic, experimental, improvisational, etc..with an actual 'song' sometimes thrown in! The average Vocokesh CD is a mixed bag of styles. The music is instrumental, no vocals! Asked about this once in an interview, Franecki simply explained, '...hell, none of us are poets, which is fine, because none of us can sing anyway!' The sounds have to speak for themselves! During the summer of 2000, Franecki rejoined F/i as a self described 'semi-permanent guest member..' and has appeared on the last two F/i CDs, though Vocokesh is his main project and outlet.
